Makenzie’s story is about faith, resilience, and finding the right fit. Growing up in a small, private school in Old Hickory, Tennessee, she dreamed of becoming a nurse. After her initial plans to attend another institution in Alabama fell through, Makenzie felt discouraged. However, something told her to check out UNA again; it was the best decision she could have made.
During an Admitted Students Day event, Makenzie reconnected with Ms. Kim Mauldin in admissions, who went above and beyond to help her secure scholarships and early acceptance into UNA’s nursing program. Makenzie was able to attend UNA on a full-ride scholarship, and she quickly found herself thriving in the supportive environment.
UNA’s Anderson College of Nursing and Health Professions was a game-changer for Makenzie. With state-of-the-art facilities, including simulation labs that mimic real hospital settings, she gained hands-on experience that prepared her for the challenges of nursing. The professors’ genuine care for their students made a lasting impact on Makenzie, who appreciated their encouragement and support as she navigated the demands of nursing school.
Despite starting college during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, Makenzie found her place at UNA. She got involved in numerous campus organizations, including the Honors College, the Presidential Mentors Academy, and the Student Nursing Association, where she served as president. She also became the president of her sorority’s chapter and was crowned Miss Black and Gold. Balancing school, extracurriculars, and self-care was challenging, but Makenzie’s passion for nursing motivated her.
Makenzie’s goal is to become a labor and delivery nurse and eventually work her way up to becoming a family nurse practitioner focusing on maternal health. She’s passionate about advocating for reducing maternal mortality rates, especially for women of color, and she’s committed to making a difference in the lives of her future patients.
UNA has given Makenzie the tools and support she needs to succeed in her nursing career. She feels well-prepared for her future, from the top-notch facilities to the caring professors. Makenzie advises future students to trust the process, take things one step at a time, and know that they’re not alone in their journey. UNA is where students can find their passion, build lifelong relationships, and make a lasting impact.
