For Jasmine Parks, a junior social work major from nearby Muscle Shoals, Alabama, the University of North Alabama was always close to home—but it wasn’t until she saw the university’s band perform that it truly came into focus as her future. “Being in band at my high school, I was captivated by their performance and wanted to be part of something like that,” she recalls. That spark, combined with a deeply personal motivation, turned UNA from a familiar name into a powerful destination.

Jasmine’s father once attended UNA but was unable to finish his degree due to limited resources and the pressures of working while in school. For Jasmine, continuing his journey became a driving force. “I wanted to finish what he started and make him proud,” she says. “He is very excited that I am here.”

At UNA, Jasmine found a welcoming environment and abundant support. She initially began her college path as a psychology major, but a calling to serve her community shifted her focus. “I switched to social work because of my passion for helping my community and engaging in humanitarian aid,” she explains. With its hands-on approach, including internships and field studies, UNA’s social work program gave her the real-world preparation she was looking for.

Resources like financial aid, TRiO support, and scholarships have made all the difference in her journey. “UNA has provided numerous resources that have eased my concerns about finances, academics, and making connections,” she says. Even as a commuter student, Jasmine has found her place. “I feared missing out, but through student organizations and services, I have built a strong network.”

Leadership has also become a defining part of her experience. As a saxophone player in the UNA band, Jasmine stepped into a section leader role this year. “It was challenging, but it gave me valuable leadership skills,” she shares. Her favorite memory so far? Traveling with the band to Tallahassee, Florida, for the UNA’s football game against Florida State— an unforgettable moment that deepened her pride in the Lion family.

Beyond academics and music, Jasmine’s involvement in groups like the Diversity Student Ambassadors has introduced her to new cultures and perspectives. “UNA’s diversity and inclusive environment have exceeded my expectations,” she says. Her roommate, from Myanmar, has been just one example of the many rich connections she’s formed on campus.

For students like Jasmine, UNA is more than a local university—it’s a place of opportunity, transformation, and belonging. “To anyone considering college, especially first-generation students, I would say UNA offers a supportive community, abundant resources, and opportunities to succeed,” she affirms. Her advice to fellow students is heartfelt and direct: “Don’t suffer in silence—ask for help, and UNA will provide it. There is always someone here to support you.”
