When Divine Goshea was younger, he didn’t imagine himself in college. Growing up in Phenix City, Alabama, he said his opportunities felt limited. “No one really expects much to come out of you,” he shared. “But coming to UNA opened my eyes to see what’s truly possible. Whatever you put your mind to, you can accomplish.”

He first discovered UNA after sending his ACT scores during high school and receiving a scholarship letter shortly after. That opportunity, he says, changed his life.

A first-generation college student, Divine credits the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program with helping him make the transition. “Katie [Austin] and Autumn [Terry] are absolutely amazing. They’ve helped me with everything… from tutoring and financial aid… to professional experience,” he said. “I’ve got to give them their flowers.”

Divine, now a senior majoring in computer science with a minor in cybersecurity, has found his passion in technology. His ultimate goal is to work for a defense contractor like Lockheed Martin, but for now, he’s preparing for his career as a software engineer.

Since switching majors from finance his freshman year, Divine has thrived in UNA’s new computing and mathematics building, which features an artificial intelligence lab equipped with advanced technology. He’s especially inspired by professors with strong research backgrounds in fields like artificial intelligence. “It’s becoming really important in tech, and it’s growing really fast.”

For Divine, UNA has provided more than just academic resources—it has offered community and belonging. “There are plenty of opportunities not to feel lost here,” he explained. “Even if you’re a first-gen student… you’ll find resources and support. UNA makes it easy to see that you’re not isolated.”

Looking back, Divine is proud of how far he has come—and eager to encourage others to take the leap. “If you’re thinking about going to college, I’d recommend it. There’s no other experience like it. UNA really can change your life.”
