Trey Nichols grew up surrounded by music in the Shoals, where his family was involved in the local music scene. His passion for music was nurtured at Florence High School and continued to grow when he chose to attend UNA. For Trey, UNA wasn’t a backup plan—it was a way to deepen his understanding of the music business and build on his years of gigging experience.
Majoring in Entertainment Business, Trey learned the ins and outs of the music industry, from publishing contracts to record labels. He credits UNA’s Entertainment Industry department, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, with providing the knowledge he needed to navigate the business side of the music world, which has been invaluable as he balances performing with his band, Light Watch, and working on personal projects.
“If you’re a creative like me and you want to get a degree in the arts, UNA is the perfect place.“
UNA’s small class sizes and supportive professors helped Trey make meaningful connections that enhanced his learning. His internship at a local studio gave him hands-on experience, and he’s been able to apply what he’s learned to his music career. UNA’s connection to the rich musical history of the Shoals and the broader Florence community has only deepened Trey’s love for the area, making it the perfect place to pursue his dreams.
Trey plans to continue touring while keeping Florence as his home base. He’s confident that the education and experience he gained at UNA will carry him forward in his career, and he’s thankful for the university’s opportunities.
